Ontario Food Tour 2006 - Part 1
So I just got home from vacation. It was Andrea's reading week, so we decided to do something. We had always been talking about different restaurants that we'd gone to before we met, so we decided to take the week and drive around Ontario to go see them. She's from a town called Geraldton in northern Ontario (Thunder Bay area), and I'm from Tilbury (Windsor area).
The first day was spent driving to Geraldton. It took about 12 - 13 hours. I brought my ipod, so there was good music.
I met her dad. He's pretty much Michael Madsen. I don't know ... something about having Mr. Blonde as your girlfriend's dad just wouldn't sit too comfortably with anyone. But he was a great guy.
We ate the world's best poutine and went to the local peeler bar later that night. Since it's Geraldton though, they only have strippers like once a week, and they have to come from Sudbury, several hours away. I've never really been one for the strip clubs, but having gone to high school in Chatham it's a given that I've been to the Chatham bar "Spanky's", and even they had strippers round the clock. While we were there there were three patrons not including us awaiting this week's performer, who was on route. She never showed up, and I think it's for the best. I don't think I'd really want to see what calibre of stripper they send to Geraldton on a Monday night.
Anyways, the next day we went snowmobiling. I hadn't been in a few years, and Andrea hadn't been lately either. So it was a little bumpy. And by bumpy I mean we buried the snowmobile in four feet of powder. The first time we got it out on our own. The second time we got stuck we almost got it out. I was pushing from behind and she was working the gas. The snowmobile went about four feet over 10 seconds of gunning it, which sent dirt, snow, twigs and branches flying right into my face. I was waist deep in snow so I couldn't do anything but sit there and take it. Eventually we had to call Budd to help us dig it out. Of course when he got there he lifted it (practically with one hand) and moved it back on the trail. Andrea and I lifting together couldn't budge the thing. Being an artist doesn't really do much for the bicepts.
That night we had Wedgies (not the grade 6 variety, but rather potato wedges) and they were phenomenal. I'm sure they took a good six months off my life, but it was worth it.
Then we left and drove three hours to Kapuskasing where we stayed at a seedy motel called the Apollo. The next morning we had breakfast and were once again on the road.
More to come, gotta get some work done now though...
